The directors of Gen Community share a vision of how new forms of finance can empower individuals and communities to catalyse social impact through the development of the low carbon economy. The team has a strong track record in low carbon energy, finance and community investment and is driven to ensure that Generation Community flourishes whilst its members and communities prosper.

Our team

James Alexander

James AlexanderJames is chairman of the Gen Community board.  James was a co-founder of the pioneering UK peer-to-peer platform Zopa and is currently a Partner at The Foundation, a leading growth and innovation consultancy, and a Trustee of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Green Thing, a public service that inspires people to lead a greener life.   James was previously strategy director at Egg during its early growth period, and created the the business case for Smile – the Co-op’s internet bank.  He holds an MBA from INSEAD and a first class honours degree from University College, London.

Andy Heald

Andy HealdAndy has 12 years private wealth-management experience – FSA registered. In 2009   he set up Cornwall Renewables, Energy and Management (CREAM) installing and advising on wind and solar PV projects for private and commercial clients. Andy holds an MSc Energy, Environmental Technology & Economics (Merit) from City University, London, a Securities Diploma and a BA Hons Political Theory & Economics (1993). He teaches kite – surfing and organises a monthly beach clean on Fistral beach, Cornwall.

James Mansfield

James MansfieldJames founded the Green Exchange Network (GEN) in 2010 to focus on alternative financing models for energy projects. Technical Director at Ecodynamic, a reinvestment society using surpluses from renewable energy assets to support UK sustainable farming. He has conducted commercial research and financial analysis for clean power generation across the UK and worked on utility wind farm operations. He holds a first class honours, Renewable Energy Masters of Engineering from Exeter University, and loves cross country running and rock climbing.

Jo Cook

Jo CookQualified as a solicitor in London in 2002, specialised in non-contentious construction law and practiced in London for 10 years. Jo worked for the London Borough of Southwark before joining top 100 law firms. Jo then spent 12months assisting Solarcentury’s Company Secretary on legal matters before setting up her own contract consultancy business. Jo still specialises in commercial contracts, in particular construction and renewable energy contracts.

Gareth Hughes

Gareth HughesGareth established Beetle Capital in 2008, focusing on accelerating investment into the natural capital economy  – the natural ecosystems that provide goods and services to human society. As a founder and board member of Climate Change Capital (CCC) – a low carbon investment fund – he led the incubation, development and raising of circa $1.75bn for CCC funds. Gareth is on the board of Ecodesk and The Ice Organisation, which aims to mitigate climate change through mass consumer purchasing power. He is Trustee of the Global Cool Foundation and has led UK trade delegations to China and India.

Martin Large

Martin LargeMartin is a director of Stroud Common Wealth, founded in 1999 to develop co-operatives, small businesses and community land trusts (CLT). He provided technical assistance to the Fordhall Farm community buyout in 2005 – 6, set up Gloucestershire Land for People CLT, and was the chair of the CLT National Demonstration Project 2007 – 9. Martin is also the founding executive director of the Biodynamic Land Trust, and leads co-operative, land, capital and asset developments. Martin is a director of Hawthorn Press, founded in 1981.

Bethan Wynton

Bethan Wynton

Bethan manages communications and community programs. Bethan has a range of knowledge and experience in social media, PR, and campaign management. She has a strong background in consumer relations, and holds a BA (Hons) in Photography from Falmouth University College. Outside of Gen Community she assists Mencap with marketing for Sensory Saturdays and works with United Response, supporting people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and physical disabilities to live in the community.
